Gideon's 50th Anniversary

Gideon Won, But Other Victories are Still to Come

Since 1963, public defense lawyers, clients, and advocates have fought to realize the right to counsel that Gideon’s victory heralded. In the 1990s and early 2000s, NYSDA, alone or as part of the Gideon Day Coalition, the Gideon Coalition, and the Campaign for an Independent Public Defense Commission, coordinated Gideon Day observances to educate legislators and the public about this vital right. Fifty years after Gideon won, his name remains a call to action.
